year in review 2013.
Dec. 30th, 2013 11:04 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
On December 7th I decided to swear off twitter and plurk (outside of plurks tagged with tf or obviously about
thoughtformed). I wasn’t sure if I could do it, so I didn’t say anything when I made the decision, but as it’s been more than 21 days, I think I can safely say I formed the habit of not regularly checking those sites anymore. I realized I had an unhealthy obsession with checking them all the time, so basically: It’s me, not you. I hope we can still be friends. Etc.
I’ll still respond to @ messages and DMs on twitter, and any @’s and pplurks on plurk because I’ve got email notifications turned on for all four of those. I've also got text stuff for twitter enabled, so we could even use that like text messaging.
I know it's kind of awkward and weird making an announcement about this, but I also really really hate it when people disappear from social media with little fanfare and then you just wonder about them for a long time, so... yeah. Also, it really has been a conscious decision, so it felt like a conscious announcement needed to be made. I'm so addicted that I don't think I can use the websites without getting full-blown obsessive again; even checking plurk for tf stuff feels dangerous, but I don't want to miss out on plotting things!
Anyway. End of year meme!!!
For previous years, please see: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, & 2012.
01. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
Went on a series of dates with the same guy.
02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions? Will you make more for next year?
Last year I said:
So, this year: no twitter/mostly no plurk, and also: have a networking lunch once a month, and volunteer once a month. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS PRETTY AMBITIOUS (haha I'm pathetic) SO WE WILL SEE.
03. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
04. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, my paternal grandmother, Helen.
05. What countries did you visit? What states?
NONE but maybe Japan 2014??
I decided to add “what states” to this question so I actually have an answer. Washington for Sakuracon in Seattle, Illinois for C2E2 in Chicago. YAY!
06. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
Routine.
07. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Getting the call that my grandmother was at the end and would die within a few days. I think the “why” is self-explanatory. I still remember, I was sitting with Roni and Sam, and Alison had left the table for some reason. We were at Jimmy John’s; I was in Junpei cosplay. It was Saturday. And I came back and explained the call and cried and pulled myself together for the rest of the weekend. I also remember coming back and not having the strength to see her one last time. I still flip flop on whether or not I feel guilty about that.
08. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Career development — I covered for my boss while she was out on emergency medical leave for three weeks, received a Service Recognition Award for my efforts, became a subject matter expert in Blueprint (software system) and marine movements, as well as mended my (exceedingly awkward and almost antagonistic) relationship with my scheduler.
09. What was your biggest failure?
Not being as authentic in my work ethic as I should have been.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Do we count really bad sore throats due to allergies? I had that last week.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
iPhone 5S. I love.. the fingerprint unlock… so much… Also today I bought some Michael Kors jeans OH MY GOD THEY'RE SO SOFT AND COMFORTABLE AND ONLY $40 AT TJ MAXX
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My sister, who for the first time in her life is eating fruits and vegetables and drinking tons of water and has lost 50 lbs. BUT MOSTLY REALIZING SHE NEEDS TO EAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Ohhhhh goddddd umm probably Stephen; he didn't handle his breakup very well.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Food, electronics.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Jackie coming to visit Houston (and then moving here!).
16. What songs will always remind you of 2013?
I got nada.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Read.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Twitter, getting worked up over stupid drama that is, in the end, exceedingly pointless.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
At my parents’ house, as usual :)
21. How will you be spending New Years?
Sophia's 30th birthday party. It's a masquerade themed house party! I still don't have a mask. (UPDATE: I found a cheap mask, the night was great, but somehow ended in my friends calling an ambulance for an incoherent drunk girl and a guy who had been assaulted. Cue people instagramming the EMTs showing up [WTF] and someone throwing a drink over the railing of the roof and onto me and Lindsay. Classy! We left after that.)
22. Did you fall in love in 2013?
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
No.

Little Mix.
28. What did you want and get?
Recognition for my efforts at work.
29. What did you want and not get?
A boyfriend. It’d be nice to have someone to come home to, you know? It’s been one of those years.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I think Frozen? I feel like this year I slacked on watching movies regularly.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I had dinner at Blue Fish House with my closest friends and acquaintances here inside the loop in Houston. Melissa, Bernie, Justin, Brandon, Joyal, Anthony, Jeffrey, Lindsay, and Sophia. Jeremy got drunk and couldn’t drive to the restaurant. Stephen and Lauren had some kind of concert. At this time, Brandon and I were talking, so he drove me there. I turned 25.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I honestly can't think of anything.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?

My mom, my friends, taking vacations and actually traveling this year.

The month Joyce was out sick — I think it was September? Anyway I was super stressed and it was awful haha.
40. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
Focus on what’s important. Sometimes you have a choice in what you're stressing out about / being upset over.

02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions? Will you make more for next year?
Last year I said:
Resolution for next year is going to be pretty simple: Resolution is to cook more and keep a food planner. NOT A FOOD LOG BECAUSE THAT HAS STOPPED WORKING FOR ME. I need to plan my meals for the week so that I'll actually cook.ahahahahaha NOPE

i. happier or sadder? Happier, I think. No real reason, though probably mostly that I have great friends.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter… last year’s 20 turned into another 20 lbs.
iii. richer or poorer? A LITTLE richer.
